Warning Signs Your Saddle May Not Fit Properly

A poorly-fitted saddle can negatively impact your horse’s comfort, performance and even cause permanent damage to their back over time. That’s why paying attention to their behaviour while being tacked up and ridden is crucial. Subtle changes in your horse’s demeanour or way of going could indicate saddle discomfort.

Signs to Look Out for on the Ground

  • Evasion – Turning away, swinging hips or backing up when you try to put the saddle on. These are common avoidance tactics
  • Ear Pinning – Ears flattened back when cinched or saddled likely signal irritation or tension
  • Pawing – Excessive downward digging at the ground could suggest anxiety or reluctance to be tacked up

Worrying Behaviour Under Saddle

  • Short Stride – Stride length may decrease substantially
  • Lack of Forward Desire – Unwillingness to step into the bridle or move forward freely
  • Refusals – Stopping or run-outs at jumps they normally comply with
  • Hollowing Back – Inverted posture shown by tense back muscles
  • Frequent Tripping – Balance issues and asymmetrical movement
  • Disunited Canter – Cross firing due to one side of saddle not distributing weight properly
  • Bucking/Rearing – Drastic shifts in temperament
